Hugel Avenue Reconstruction

Residents and business owners in Midland are advised the Town is proceeding with the reconstruction of Hugel Avenue from Midland Avenue to George Street. The work will generally include:

  • Replacement of approximately 630m of mainline sanitary sewer, including individual service laterals to the property line;
  • Replacement of approximately 765m of watermain, including individual service laterals to the property line;
  • Installation of approximately 570m of storm sewer and associated structures; and
  • Reconstruction of approximately 765m of roadway, including the installation of concrete curb and standard 1.5m wide concrete sidewalk, within both north and south boulevards.

The work will also include restoration of all disturbed areas, driveway aprons and all surface elements within the boulevard. The Town has tendered and awarded the Contract to Maacon Construction Corporation, who are scheduled to mobilize and commence work during the week of May 13, 2019. Construction is expected to be complete in late November 2019.

Hugel Avenue will be closed throughout construction, open to local traffic and emergency vehicles only. Driveway access for local traffic will be maintained to the extent possible. If vehicular access is restricted for more than 24 hours, the contractor will provide notification at least 24 hours in advance.

    The Hugel Avenue Reconstruction is complete! The centre line painting has been finished and the roadway is now officially open! The remainder of the line painting (stop bars and bike lanes) as well as tree planting will take place in the spring of 2020.

    Canada Post is expected to resume mail delivery along this stretch of Hugel Avenue next week.

  • Hugel Avenue Reconstruction Nearing Completion

    The reconstruction project on Hugel Avenue, between Midland Avenue and George Street, is nearing completion.

    Work completed to date:

    • All underground watermain/sanitary/storm pipework is complete and commissioned.
    • Base and surface course of asphalt has been installed from Midland Avenue to George Street.

    • All curb and sidewalk work has been completed from Midland Avenue to George Street.

    • All topsoil, sod and landscaping work has been completed.

    • Driveways have been reinstated.

    • Street signs have been reinstalled.

    At this point all that remains to be done is the line painting and tree planting. The tentative, weather-permitting schedule is for the line painting to...

    At this point all that remains to be done is the line painting and tree planting. The tentative, weather-permitting schedule is for the line painting to be completed this week (Nov. 18-22). The work is expected to only take a couple of hours once crews have favourable conditions to do so. Temporary traffic control will be put in place during this work. The tree planting, to replace trees that were removed during the project, will be completed in Spring 2020.

    The Hugel Ave construction is well underway and progressing as planned. It is currently estimated that the project is approximately 75% completed. The following work has been completed to date:

    - All underground watermain/sanitary/storm pipework is complete

    - New watermain has been fully commissioned and is in service

    - All curb and sidewalk work has been completed from Russell St to Midland Ave.

    - Base course of asphalt has been installed from Russell St to Midland Ave.

    The contractor is currently working on the grading of the granular base from Russell St to George St and preparing for the installation...

    - New watermain has been fully commissioned and is in service

    - All curb and sidewalk work has been completed from Russell St to Midland Ave.

    - Base course of asphalt has been installed from Russell St to Midland Ave.

    The contractor is currently working on the grading of the granular base from Russell St to George St and preparing for the installation of curb and sidewalk on the remainder of the project. The section of Hugel Ave that has been paved will remain closed to traffic while the contractor completes driveway construction and boulevard grading.
